A Fine Collectible Edition for the Tarpon Enthusiast |

Anthony Weston Dimock was one of the first anglers to hook a tarpon on rod and reel, and this collection of essays and vintage photographs illustrates his infatuation with the silver king. Originally published in 1911, this legendary masterwork embodies all of the expeditionary drama and excitement you would expect of an angler pursuing a primitive fish, in remote waters, with crude equipment. Dimock caught his first tarpon near Homosassa Springs in 1882. "At first I thought the wonderful being was a mermaid," Dimock recounted when the great fish sprang from the water, "and as I noted her fierce display of activity and strength, I pitied the merman who came home late without a better excuse than a meeting of the lodge." |
For the next twenty years, Dimock relentlessly pursued the tarpon with rod, reel, handline, and harpoon. The majority of his obsession centered around Florida Bay and the Everglades with occasional expeditions into the Lower Keys. The book contains 70 images of
leaping and crashing tarpon shot by Dimock's son, Julian.
Considering that he produced these images with a bulky plate camera
while balanced in a rickety wooden canoe, the amazing photography,
alone, is reason enough to own this classic edition. |
